Ferntree Gully North Primary School has a passion for learning and their community.  The old school buildings were arbitrarily placed and inflexible, dividing the school and inhibiting the School’s focus on personalised learning using the Walker Learning Approach.

Brand Architects designed a whole-school solution to create a new ‘heart’ for the School.  The new buildings wrap around an existing gully.  This natural feature is utilised to create an amphitheatre and rain garden where the whole School community can gather.

For this project, flexibility meant creating purposeful learning spaces that can either link together or be closed off as required via large sliding doors.  Each morning students are involved in “Investigation Time” where students can move freely through all the rooms in their building to choose their own play-based learning activities, outside of the usual class groups.
