Doveton College is an Australian first – a social and educational project without precedent that provides a model for integrated community service provision in Australia. In addition to it’s educational program, the College provides a full range of welfare, community service and education services for families and children from birth through to year nine, under a single management model. Facilities include an early childhood centre, maternal and child health and a suite of other community facilities.
The project transforms the social and educational outcomes of this ‘at-risk’ community by taking a child-centred approach, supported by family services and education. Brand Architects were involved in the development of this visionary brief in association with DEECD, the City of Casey and a range of community services currently operating in the area. The project outcomes are being documented as research projects by two of Melbourne’s major tertiary institutions.
The buildings combine to create a rich “urban village” atmosphere, with building scales and arrangements relating to the particular age group. There is an outstanding collection of flexible, interconnected learning spaces that support a broad range of activities. Despite the constraints of the site, the complex is able to let the community in, while maintaining the operation of the College without any compromise.
